Chapter 9
Anneliese
I found the Great Room, I have a mug of tea, and itâs all coming together.
I spent Tuesday wallowing, Iâm not going to lie. When Lex said that we should call it quits and I needed to go back to cozies, I spiraled a bit. I filled the giant jetted bathtub in the Bishop suite full of hot water and bubbles and sank up to my nose. With hair piled on the top of my head, I allowed myself to think about the future honestly with nothing holding me back.
I tried not to think about my rent and bills. While those would come due every month, if I continued writing cozies, I could pay them with a little extra money every month. I left my day job two years ago to become a full-time author because I could afford my lifestyle on what I was making. I was working as an Event Planner and writing mysteries on the side. I was earning enough money putting out a book every couple of months to take some time off and start publishing once a month. While my income didnât soar exorbitantly, I did replace my Event Planner salary.
So what had changed? Why was I so desperate to leave a gig that would, sooner or later, start paying off?
It took me almost an hour of soaking to figure it out. I talked through several reasons and shot them all down. By the time it dawned on me, most of the bubbles had popped and the water was starting to get cold.
I no longer felt challenged.
It was the same reason I had started writing in the first place. Iâd gotten my degree in Hospitality Management at twenty-one and started working fifty, sixty-hour weeks the next day. For four long years, I planned weddings, funerals, luncheons, and everything in between. It was fulfilling for a while.
But about three years into it I started getting bored. It was all the same. What kind of food do you want? What kind of linens do you prefer? Letâs pick a venue. Letâs get some entertainment. I had some creative say, but not enough. I could make some suggestions, but the bride could veto them. I was stifled and bored and I couldnât see a way out.
Thatâs when I saw an article online about self-publishing. Iâd always thought I had some talent as a writer, so I looked into it. I wrote a quick little 15,000-word book, bought a $20 cover online, and threw it out there for anyone to read. I expected the royalties to roll in. I donât know why. Maybe because I read so many success stories. But when I checked my dashboard a few days later and saw that Iâd only made $12.52, I was disappointed.
I had talent. I could string together a few sentences in a creative manner. Why couldnât people see that?
Because people couldnât see my work. I was one of the thousands of people putting their books out there into the world on a daily basis.
